Cognac
Following the course of the river Charente east, is the famous town
of Cognac. Famous for its brandy, home to Hennessy, Martell, Remy
Martin amongst others, tasting and tours of the distilleries are available.
Cognac is also home to the Cognac Blues festival. The town is closed
off to traffic and for a week becomes a music festival. Musicians
play in the streets and in the main amphitheatre throughout the day
and into the evening. Over the years bands/artists such as Massif
Attack, Status Quo, Joe Cocker have played.

Saintes
Following the course of the river Charente west, is the lively town
of Saintes with its bars and cafes. Of huge regional importance to the
Romans, it has some wonderful archaeological splendours. It's magnificent
Roman arch on the north bank of the Charente, is one of the best outside
of Rome and its splendid amphitheatre in the centre of town, make Saintes
a great place to visit.

Le Paleosite
Developed on the site where, on an archaeological dig, it was discovered
that Neanderthal man lived alongside Homo Sapiens, rather than evolved
from Neanderthal man, is Le Paleosite. An Archaeological theme park
is the best way to describe it. Hugely educational for children and
adults, it is well worth a visit.

Beaches
of Royan
Head for the cost and this part of the Atlantic shoreline has some
fabulous sandy beaches. Royan is the largest seaside resort, but there
are numerous smaller coves, resorts and beaches to be discovered all
